Save The Mountains

Save The Mountains

As we’ve been making routine trips to Beth’s home state of West Virginia, we have gotten more and more passionately involved in the fight to help save the Appalachian Mountains from being totally destroyed by mountain top removal mining. MTR makes for poisoned water, public safety issues, destruction of local culture and history, unemployment, tons of explosives every day, many dead animals, wasted resources, toxic sludge ponds, and on and on. (Continued below)

Currently the Love Art Lab is doing numerous projects about MTR and the mountains. We are in the process of shooting a film, Good-Bye Gauley Mountain. We’ve done several photo shoots from small planes to witness the destruction, we’re marrying a mountain in Ohio, and are creating large collages. We have been interviewing, researching, and documenting. We attended Mountain Justice Summer Camp in Kentucky where we learned a lot, and also gave a talk about our work in Sexecology, ecosexuality and our art projects to help save the mountains. When the esteemed artist Reverend Billy put out a call for people to “build a mountain” in a Chase Bank lobby we joined in his protest. Chase was a major funder of MTR. As we so love Appalachia, we of the Love Art Lab made not one mountain, but two at a Chase ATM, and spoke with bankers about these issues. Reverend Billy got arrested doing his protest. Chase Bank issued a statement that it was going to stop funding MTR. Reverend Billy is our hero: revbilly.com. The issues raised with MTR are tearing families apart, and we understand that these issues are complex. Our hearts go out to the people of the coal fields and we hope for good things all these families’ futures! Meanwhile, everyone please turn out your lights as much as possible.
